Together Everyone Achieves More

Where Vision Meets Teamwork
The mission of the Texas Credit Union League is to protect credit unions, and promote their growth, strength and unity. Here's a review of the activities that make up the League.

Legislative and Political Advocacy
The Legislative Department lobbies on behalf of credit unions to preserve the federal tax status, the insurance fund, field of membership legislation, bankruptcy reform and other critical issues. It guards credit union rights at the state level, voices support for an independent regulator, directs grassroots activities (including campaign schools and Hike the Hill visits) and distributes legislative alerts.

Texas makes one of the largest commitments to the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee at the national level and this department administers the Texas Credit Union Political Action Committee on the state level. In a recent election cycle, this department distributed almost $200,000 to pro-credit union Texas legislators and candidates.

Regulatory and Compliance
The Regulatory and Compliance Department stays abreast of federal and state regulations and proposals. It works with credit unions daily to provide answers to compliance inquiries and operations questions. This department also produces the Texas-specific "Credit Union Compliance Manual" for federal and state credit unions, available on disk or online.

Marketing, PR & Communications
This team is the central voice for the Texas credit union movement. It makes sure that everyone: credit unions, the media and the general public has the latest, most comprehensive information.

Leadership and Management
To help credit unions lead and manage in an ever-changing environment, the League offers several programs. These include:

  • Credit Union Strategic Department provides "hands-on" consulting services in strategic planning, financial management and operations and is responsible for the small credit union development initiatives. The Consultants are the personal, day-to-day link between the League and credit unions.
  • The Asset-Liability Management Department provides semi-annual financial analysis to more than 90 percent of Texas credit unions. ALM seminars, workshops, individual credit union sessions, policy development and ABAJO software are also services provided.
  • The Research Department helps credit unions identify the attitudes and needs of members by conducting surveys and focus groups. This department is also responsible for the annual "Credit Union Compensation Survey" and "Image Survey."
  • The League coordinates numerous awards programs to recognize the efforts of credit unions and credit union leaders. These include the Hall of Fame, Professional of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Marketer of the Year, Chapter of the Year, Lone Star Marketing Awards, Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Program, Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action and the Bridge Awards For Excellence in Member Education.
